NANA'S GREEN HOUSE PHILOSOPHY
Your child should be part of system that supports a healthy environment for the future they will inherit.
Your child's daily environment should be one of love, empathy and understanding.  This environment should encourage the growth of self-confidence, strength, health and responsibility.
Their daily environment should be rich in materials, books and activities that stimulate thought, and learning in an atmosphere of calm and fun.
Your child should be nurtured with food that is full of nutrients and free of toxins.
Play based learning
Children have a natural curiosity that is wonderful and boundless.  They are interested in language, people, animals, machines, plants, the elements, and the way everything works.  In the preschool years, their learning is exponential, as they simultaneously learn vocabulary, social behavior, and the behavior of the natural and civilized world. Nana's Green House seeks to provide the opportunity to explore the world without the goal oriented pressures that children will encounter in their later schooling.  This is the basic principle of play-based learning. The play and the experiences are the learning.

NANA'S GREEN LIFESTYLE

In my home, being green is a common sense balance based on pragmatism, understanding and respect for modern science, and a desire to live in balance with nature.
  • I use organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible, as well as organic meats and milks.  If I cannot use organic, I will peel fruits and veggies to minimize pesticide exposure.  I also avoid food and treats that contain synthetic colors and preservatives.  I am not obsessive about these practices, but believe strongly that we should minimize children's exposure to chemical pollution.
  • I use enamel or stainless steel cooking utensils, and glass or safe (BPA/phthalate free) plastic dishes for children.  I use safe plastic, wood and cloth toys, and check for lead paint content whenever appropriate.
  • I believe in fresh air and exercise for all children whenever possible.  I also believe children benefit in countless subtle ways by being exposed to a love of nature.  We spend a lot of time in my peaceful backyard, rather than in front of the TV.
  • I avoid toxic chemicals for cleaning and sanitizing. Mold and insect control are also done with natural compounds.  I will be happy to use whatever diapering system you are using for your child, including cloth diapers or compostable diaper liners.
  • We will have many gardening and nature projects as part of Nana's Green House.  I do not preach or scold about ecological principles, I just try to live them and share my understanding with the kids.
  • I believe that the benefits of childhood vaccinations far outweigh the risks.  Immunizations must be up to date for children to attend my daycare.  Please check the American Academy of Pediatrics website for further information about the safety and green aspects of immunizations: http://www.aap.org/healthtopics/Immunizations.cfm
